History

Founded 1925 by Dr. Dr. Ludwig Marxer

Marxer & Partner was established in June 1925, by Dr. Dr. Ludwig Marxer, the father of today's partner Dr. Peter Marxer. In the early 1930s, he already worked with three employees and, from 1941 to 1988 with Adulf Peter Goop, who subsequently became a partner. By virtue of his knowledge, drive and reliability, Dr. Dr. Ludwig Marxer soon got the reputation as leading lawyer not only in Liechtenstein but was also known abroad. He successfully represented prominent national and international clients in sometimes legendary court cases.

During the political and economic crises of the 1920s and 1930s, Liechtenstein became a safe haven from political and racial prosecution for many people. Dr. Dr. Ludwig Marxer successfully took care of their interests, not only as a lawyer but also as a politician.

Between 1926 and 1933 Dr. Dr. Ludwig Marxer was Vice-Prime Minister of Liechtenstein. His primary focus as a politician was to help Liechtenstein to overcome the consequences of the world economic crisis. He dedicated himself to the development of the country as a financial centre, to secure Liechtenstein a solid existence.

Take-over 1962 by Dr. Peter Marxer

Dr. Peter Marxer joined his father’s firm as attorney at law in 1959. Upon Dr. Dr. Luwig Marxer’s death in 1962, he succeeded his father and continued to run the firm together with Adulf Peter Goop as a partner.

In addition to his successful work as a lawyer and businessman, Dr. Peter Marxer has also been engaged in politics for many years. From 1966 to 1982 he served as a member of parliament and was the parliamentary leader of his party in the Liechtenstein Parliament.

Expansion of the law firm since 1980s

In the 1980s the law firms number of employees grew steadily. During that period the human and structural resources have been built up to become an international law firm. The major expansion of the firm and its dynamic development led to the highest standard of professional expertise in all areas.

In 1988 Adulf Peter Goop retired and passed on his partnership to his son, Dr. Peter Goop, who had already joined the firm in 1980.

Dr. Walter Kieber, former Prime Minister of the Principality of Liechtenstein was Partner of the law firm from 1981 to 1999.

In 1997 Dr. Herbert Oberhuber, who has been in the firm since 1971, was appointed executive member and partner of Domar Fiduciary and Management Establishment and of Protec Trust Management Establishment. Since 1998 he has also been consultant of the law firm.

The further expansion of the partnership in 1998 was another important stage in the continuing growth of the law firm. Dr. Hermann Böckle, who meanwhile retired, Dr. Karl Josef Hier, Dr. Johannes Michael Burger and Dr. Heinz Grabher, all of them long-term associates of the law firm, became partners.

In 1999, Dr. Peter Marxer jun., the son of Dr. Peter Marxer, joined the partnership. Dr. Peter Marxer jun. represents the third generation of the founding family in the law firm.

The partnership was further expanded in 2004 with Dr. Robert Schneider. Dr. Michael Grabher and lic. iur. Jesús Cortés joined the partnership in 2006. Another partnership expansion took place at the beginning of 2008 when the law firm took on Dr. Michael Oberhuber, Lic. iur. Christoph Huber, Dr. Stefan Wenaweser and Dr. Markus Summer as new partners.

Most recently, in 2009, Dr. Mario A. König, Dr. Armin Dobler, Mag. Jochen Schreiber and Dr. Doris Furtner joined the partnership.

These expansions of the partnership have been another milestone in the history of the law firm and have created a sound basis for ongoing growth in the future.

At the end of 2006 Dr. Peter Goop withdrew from his partner position, but he continues to perform various activities for the law firm as an of counsel.
